Dear Jean-Claude,
My plans are moving forward on my stay in Paris next year. I will most
likely be there from April 1, 1977 until the middle of September. I could work for
IRCAM for 2 months (or more if desired) starting whenever it would be convenient.
During this time I could install the SCORE program and FUNC (which creates function
libraries) and give a series of seminars on the use of these. I am currently pursuing
some commercial prospects for my music printing program however I could install this
also for non-commercial use. I'm sure something can be worked out on this. On the
financial side, I suppose it would be reasonable to ask for the equivalent of my Stanford
salary for 1977. That would be $2100 per month.
I have enclosed a copy of some program notes for "Machines of Loving Grace".
This work requires a narrator and a solo bassoon along with the tape. The tape uses
2 channels. I believe I have a 2-track tape, 15 ips (made for a REVOX) as well as
a 4-track tape, 7 1/2 ips (made for a SONY.) If this piece were publicly performed
I would like to participate as tape operator. I don't know if there is a French version
of the poem (by Richard Brautigan) -- if not I could do one, with the help of my
actor son-in-law, Jacques Chailleux. The total duration of the work is about 12 to 14
minutes if memory serves me correctly.
I hope the past year has been a good one for you and that the Baden Baden
meetings will be successful. I wish I could have come along with the others.
Very sincerely,
Leland Smith
